Austin – The Texas Senate approved a strong pro-life bill late Friday night designed to protect innocent life and improve health care for women.

House Bill 2 prohibits abortions 20 weeks after conception, demands that all abortion clinic physicians have admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles of the abortion clinic, calls for each abortion clinic to meet the same standards as an ambulatory surgical center, and requires that a physician be present for the administration of an RU 486 medically induced abortion.

The Senate approved the pro-life, pro-women legislation largely along party lines with a vote of 19-11. The bill came to the Senate after a vote of 96-49 in the House of Representatives.

Senator Estes praised the strong pro-life legislation and emphasized the importance of improving the health and safety of women.

Senator Estes said HB 2 “will improve health care for women and is necessary to help prevent the killing of innocent life. It ensures that women who make the incredibly difficult decision to have an abortion receive the proper care they deserve in a safe, medically appropriate environment.”
